Back-to-Work succeeds when hearts and minds support

Interesting report and data about combining psychological treatment with employment support. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/mentalhealth/bulletins/theimpactofemploymentadvisorsinnhstalkingtherapiesonemployeeearningsandemploymentstatusengland/april2014tomarch2025

After decades running programmes helping disabled people back to work, it was clear that many needed help with the psychological consequences of acquiring a disability, of (potential) job loss and of lost self-actualisation.

Our approach at Disability Dynamics Ltd echoed this report although we didn’t pretend to offer psychological treatment.

Instead, we focussed on individually tailored employment support while giving equal high priority to the personal elements of regaining confidence, empowerment, fulfilment etc (aiming to reduce the anxiety, stress etc resulting from the onset of a life-changing health condition and its work consequences). We were also beginning to measure wider positive health improvements with reductions in GP/A&E attendances etc.

Essentially, employment support was far more successful when clients were treated as people with valuable potential rather than  as part of a collective, de-personalised  problem of “low-hanging fruit” or “scroungers”. I describe our approach in the book “It could be You…” which includes many individual stories. https://amzn.eu/d/0fLCuvlz
