British blind veteran features in national exhibition.

I am a woman in my late sixties with fair skin and short dark hair, in my kitchen leaning on my countertop smiling warmly at the camera while preparing dough with my hands – I am baking cookies. I am wearing an electric blue long sleeve top and a stripey navy and white apron. To my right there is a metal pot on the dark green countertop. To my left, a baking tray with cookie dough portions sits ready for the oven. Behind me, the traditional kitchen is decorated with floral-patterned curtains inside glass-front cabinets and a stove with shiny pots. The overall mood suggests warm, welcoming homely charm - it feels like a snapshot of me happily sharing my cooking.

Former Royal Navy Commander and blind baker, Penny Melville-Brown, is just one of the visually impaired achievers included in a professional photographic exhibition this week.

RNIB is hosting Seen – an exhibition featuring a powerful portrait series that showcases the lives of blind and partially sighted people, captured through the lens of renowned photographer Joshua Bratt: https://joshuabratt.co.uk/

Penny said, “This image reflects my approach to life: confident, determined, ambitious and having fun. ”Baking Blind” was the result of winning an international prize but it wasn’t just about cooking across six continents with professional and home cooks.  My goal was to show that life without sight can be as fulfilling as anyone else’s.”  Find her recipes, videos and audio recordings at www.pennymelvillebrown.com.

Exhibition details: 12-14 September 2025, 11am-4pm

RNIB, The Grimaldi Building, 154A Pentonville Road, London, N1 9JE
