Many people with health conditions (long-term physical or mental health or learning disabilities) may have fallen foul of the DWP benefits system over the last 10 years. It can be hugely demeaning, distressing and add new mental health illness or make others worse.
Worse to the extent that the “system” may have contributed to nearly 70 suicides between 2014-20 (and perhaps more since).
You’ll have seen me writing about the current consultation on Personal Independence Payments. Coincidentally, now the Equality and Human Rights Commission is investigating whether the health checks used by DWP to decide if we are eligible for PIP and other benefits (such as Universal Credit) are legal.
