The Tax people want to help you.

I’ve been working with the tax people at HMRC for years and they would like to hear from you about “Raising standards in tax advice: protecting customers claiming tax repayments”.

They want to take action to protect you from unscrupulous repayment agent practises that might not have your best interests at heart.

They want to hear about:

  • If you use an agent to recover tax on your behalf, making sure the repayment reaches you (Restricting the use of assignments, where the legal right to a repayment transfers from a taxpayer to an agent).
  • Making sure you know what you are signing up for with a repayment agent (Introducing measures designed to ensure taxpayers see material information about a repayment agent’s service before entering into a contractual agreement).
  • Providing a register of repayment agents (Requiring repayment agents to formally register with HMRC).

The HMRC team will be holding some round-table discussions.

If you have experiences to share, ideas for improvements and would like to take part in the discussions, please emailrepaymentsconsultation@hmrc.gov.uk.
